Petroceramics: Driving Innovation in Advanced Ceramics

At the forefront of materials innovation, Petroceramics is one of Europe’s leading companies in the field of advanced technical ceramics, delivering cutting-edge solutions to the automotive, aerospace, defense, and energy sectors — both in Europe and worldwide.

Founded in 2003 as a University of Milan spin-off, Petroceramics was born from the idea that true innovation happens when industry and research work hand in hand. Since then, we’ve been transforming high-potential research into real-world industrial applications.

Our journey took a major leap forward with the entry of Brembo S.p.A. as a shareholder, which fueled the development of carboceramic materials used in high-performance braking systems — setting new standards for durability, safety, and performance.

From there, we expanded our horizons:

  • In 2010, we began developing silicon carbide and boron carbide ceramics for ballistic protection, offering lightweight, high-strength solutions for personal and vehicle armor.
  • In 2016, we entered the aerospace sector, pioneering ceramic matrix composites through Liquid Silicon Infiltration (LSI).
    Today, our aerospace portfolio includes:
    • Carbon fiber-reinforced ceramics for thermal protection systems
    • Carbon/Carbon (C/C) composites for launcher nozzle throats and other mission-critical components

In 2024, we extended our commitment to innovation by launching Hydrospark S.r.l., marking our official entry into the energy sector with a focus on next-generation energy storage technologies.

Mission

Turning Knowledge into Real-World Innovation

Driven by a vision of mutual benefit, Petroceramics positions itself as the bridge between cutting-edge know-how and the real-world needs of the industrial production landscape.

Innovation is at the core of everything we do. We specialize in simplifying complex systems and processes through smart, efficient solutions — always grounded in a deep understanding of materials and technology. We believe that true innovation comes from focusing on the parameters that really matter.

With curiosity, agility, and a solution-driven mindset, we work closely with our partners to develop products and services that don’t just meet expectations — they exceed them.

Vision

Operating Across Multiple Scales

A core strength of our methodology is a robust multiscale approach, originally developed through the study of natural and geological phenomena. The ability to interpret features and processes across different scales — from the nanometer to the decameter — is a powerful tool in both natural sciences and materials research.

Our team’s expertise in identifying the relationship between microstructures and macroscopic properties is a proven asset in solving complex material challenges. This know-how applies to both synthetic and natural materials, under a wide range of processing and operating conditions, including extreme temperatures and pressures.

Exploring the Intersection of Materials Science and Earth Sciences

At Petroceramics, we embrace a unique “de-engineering” approach to material research — breaking down natural complexities to inspire the design of new materials, processes, and technologies. By translating the intelligence of nature into innovation, we introduce a fresh perspective to R&D in advanced ceramics and composites.

Our strength lies in the ability to drive innovation on every front:

  • Product innovation
  • Process innovation

Innovation in quality management and control

This holistic and nature-inspired methodology enables us to develop next-generation materials that are not only high-performing, but also smarter by design.

Cutting-Edge Technologies for High-Performance Materials

At Petroceramics, our strength lies not only in our advanced technical expertise, but also in the use of state-of-the-art machinery and a deep understanding of production processes and materials characterization. This synergy enables us to maintain full control over material development — directly influencing their properties and final performance.

Our ability to optimize every stage of the production process ensures consistently high-quality results, tailored for the most demanding and high-performance applications.

In the development of advanced materials, understanding their physical and structural properties is essential. That’s why our Analytical Laboratory is at the heart of our R&D efforts. Staffed by a team of versatile and experienced researchers and technicians, the lab combines advanced physicochemical analysis methods with cutting-edge instrumentation to deliver:

  • In-depth understanding of material structure and composition
  • Analysis of mechanical and thermal behavior
  • Correlation between microstructure and thermo-mechanical properties

Petroceramics is equipped with in-house facilities to manage the entire production chain for:

  • Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC)
  • Carbon/Carbon (C/C) Composites
  • Technical ceramics

This allows us to guarantee efficiency, quality, and full traceability — from raw material to final product.
